Badgers have always been focal points of controversy and some people would give them as complete protection as the rarest bird. Yet others snared them, gassed them and dug them out with dogs until the recent Badger Act made such practices illegal.
Of all the animals which survive in Britain, only deer are larger yet very few people ever see a wild badger. So that he could study them more intimately, Phil Drabble introduced hand-reared badgers to an artificial badger sett he built close to his house. They were free to come and go in his woods as they liked and he spent the next five years uncovering new mysteries about them, discovering in the process how attractive they really are.
