Howard Lancum is one of our most experienced field naturalists, and has made a special study of the badger. The collection of material for ‘Badger’s Year’ involved, among other things, over fifty nights of patient watching, exposure to all kinds of weather and, at times, considerable physical hardship. The result is a remarable record of first-hand observation.
Probably this is the first published account of an all-the-year-round, intimate study of a specific family of badgers, and it throws much new light on the species’ habits and life history. Also, Mr. Lancum is an authority on the economic status of the badger, and has some striking evidence to offer in this connection.
The photographs, all taken by the author, are very fine, and some of them are unique. The story itself is pleasingly and lucidly told, with meticulous regard for the facts. It will be of interest to all lovers of nature and especially to those who have a liking for an admirable and greatly misunderstood animal.
