Inhoud: A chance encounter with badgers in a Cotswold wood in 1936 was the beginning of Ernest Neal’s remarkable investigations into these fascinating animals. His first book on the species became a natural history best-seller and opened the door to further research and involvement in ecology and animal behaviour. In these memoirs he provides the background to this absorbing interest: broadcasting over a period of over 30 years, nature photography including filming, research on banded mongooses in Africa and expeditions at home and abroad. He also tells of his involvement in the launch of the Mammal Society and the Somerset Trust for Nature Conservation, wildlife legislation and the badgers and tuberculosis problem. While these interests were developing his main vocation was teaching. He relates some of his experiences in two very different independent schools as biologist, head of science, housemaster and deputy headmaster and formulates his own educational philosophy. He also tells the story of his upbringing and the importance of family in his life; this takes the form of a family chronicle which brings out some of the factors which shaped his interests and personality. As an ecologist he concludes that all life is about relationships and the art of living is getting those relationships right. In his final chapter he attempts to synthesise his religious beliefs, biological principles and educational ideas.
