Alan Brown and his father rescue a badly-injured cub that has been left for dead by badger diggers.
They enlist the help of a vet friend to treat him. when the cub, which Alan names ‘Bill’ has recovered from his physical injuries, it becomes alan’s job to help him to recover from the trauma of his ordeal, and train him for a return to the wild. It is a task that involves patience, time, all the knowledge which Alan, his father, and their fellow-members of the West Cheshire Badger Group have gained about the ways of badgers, and a lot of hard work.
Not that caring for the cub is anything like work for Alan. From the beginning, he regards it as a privilege. In Bill he finds an intelligent, affectionate, and fun-loving animal.
A strong bond develops between boy and badger. Strong, but elastic enough to extend to Rosemary Capes. A school contemporary of Alan’s, Rosemary turns up at the Browns’ cottage to take photographs of Bill, and promptly falls under the little badger’s spell. At Alan’s invitation, she returns again. All goes well, until a gang of badger baiters learns about Bill....
