Brocky, a tiny badger cub, was barely a week old when he arrived in the middle of the night at the Shepherd household. Brought in a shoebox by the man who had found him, he was about eight inches long and weighed only a few ounces. To Mrs Shepherd, her husband and their two children, he immediately became the centre of their lives. After being successfully hand-reared Brocky lived as a member of the family, going for walks with them, exploring the wildness of the garden, playing with the children by the fire, and even occupying their beds. But gradually, as he grew big and began to discover for himself the attractions of the outside world, the inevitable and painful decision to let him go had to be made.
Sylvia Shepherd’s great gift for describing the Lakeland countryside, and the wild life of its woods and fells throughout the changing seasons, gives added charm to the astonishing story she has to tell. Her flair for the handling and understanding of the wild creatures makes this detailed account of Brocky’s life and habits of absorbing interest to all lovers and students of natural history.
