Spreading knowledge
The proverb "unknown makes unloved" certainly applies for the badger. Today, ancient misconceptions, superstition and prejudice about badgers are greatly reduced but have not yet disappeared.
Was it in the past because of the lack of knowledge, nowadays people do not or hardly bother to find out more about this animal. Also, there are still people who want, for whatever reason, to try to put the badger in a bad light.
You can help by finding out more about the badger, for example by visiting our website or buying a book about badgers, and share your expertise with others.
You can do this by informing your family, friends and acquaintances about this website, so that they also know where to find correct information about the badger.
Misconceptions, superstition, prejudice and backbiting will never entirely disappear from the globe but it will have no control this way on people, because they know better.

Reporting new badger setts
In order to protect the badger, it is obviously very important that all badger setts are known to us.
If, for instance, in spring a lactating sow badger of an unknown badger sett is run-over, the cubs have no chance of survival without some help.
The volunteers of the badgergroup monitor not only the known badger setts, but also spend much of their time looking for new badger setts. Most of the badger setts in the province Noord-Brabant are therefore already known, but there are always badger setts which are extremely well hidden or which are on private land. If you happen to know the location of such an 'unknown' badger sett, or have one on your property, please send an email to info@dassenwerkgroepbrabant.nl
Help by providing this kind of information is very welcome.
Reporting disturbances of badger setts
Unfortunately, badger setts are being destroyed or disturbed sometimes. Vandalism and disturbance can be of all kinds and committed deliberately or by accident. This kind of information is important to us and can be reported so we can take action. Attempts can be made to repair the damage and to prevent this from happening again in future.

Reporting damage of road facilities for badgers
In order to reduce the numbers of badger road casualties on the Dutch roads, road facilities like badger fencing and badger tunnels have been made in many places.
Nevertheless, unsound construction or damage, caused by an accident for example, can lead to badgers still crossing the roads, leading to unnecessary road casualties.

Reporting dead badgers
In the Netherlands now live about 4,500 badgers. It is clear that the badger is no longer in acute danger of extinction. Yet 20% of the total population die annually on the Dutch roads. The majority of the general public in The Netherlands which has ever seen a real badger only know him as the magnificent animal lying dead along the side of the road.
It is very important that all these road casualties are reported. On the basis of this information these black spots can be resolved by taking measures, such as constructing badgers tunnels and badger fencing.
In spring, lactating sow badgers are also among the many badgers dying on our roads. Quick intervention by the Badger Group can ensure that the young badger cubs are spared a miserable death by starvation.

Reporting sightings of badgers active in daylight
Badgers are nocturnal and normally appear only by dusk out of their setts. Therefore you can't usually see a healthy badger during daytime. Therefore if you do see one, you can be almost certain that this badger is in distress.
g The badger may have been injured after, for example, a collision with a car.
g The badger may have been lost after it accidentally came onto unknown territory.
g The badger may be injured and may have been weakened by (territorial) fighting.
g Orphaned young badger cubs leave the sett entrance after a few days and go wandering around
the sett looking for their mother.
g Sometimes old badgers are found that are weakened by old age.
Because of the mobility of these badgers, you are requested to report these as soon as possible to the nationwide registration of Das & Boom rehabilitation and counselling by calling:

Feeding Fund
Unfortunately lactating sow badgers are among the many badgers dying by traffic. If we are informed quick enough we can trace the young cubs before they starve, and feed them at the sett according to professional and responsible guidelines until they are old and strong enough to fend for themselves.
A Feeding Fund was set up especially for the rescue of these badger cubs.
For only 50 Euro, a litter of young badger cubs can be rescued.

The Badgergroup Brabant is dedicated to the conservation of the badgers and it's habitat in Noord-Brabant since the formation of the group in 1989. The Badgergroup Brabant Foundation is a non-profit organisation and consists entirely of volunteers

You can support Badgergroup Brabant Foundation financially by participating in the Friends Lottery. To do this you must be over 18 years old.
Participants play along with their mobile phone number. Useful, because this way they know the lot number by heart. If you want to participate with a number other than your mobile number, then feel free.
You get, for example, a free text message once you have won a prize. Also on www.vriendenloterij.nl you can see every month if you belong to the tens of thousands of winners.
